O nome do álbum é uma gíria usada entre presidiários para designar os condenados à morte na cadeira elétrica, e a mesma é utilizada na capa do álbum. As letras do álbum abordam temas como o desespero, a morte e o medo da perda. O que se destaca também no álbum é a nova característica nas composições, como riffs e solos mais estudados e a mudança nas letras, como nas faixas "Ride the Lightning", "Fade to Black" e na instrumental "The Call of Ktulu", mas também preservando o thrash sujo do álbum anterior, partindo como exemplo as canções "Trapped Under Ice" e "Fight Fire With Fire". Ride the Lightning é também o último álbum que Dave Mustaine aparece entre os créditos das canções depois de ser retirado do grupo: em "Ride the Lightning" e "The Call of Ktulu". Este álbum está na lista dos 200 álbuns definitivos no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Em 2017, foi eleito o 11º melhor álbum de metal de todos os tempos pela revista Rolling Stone.
